Their vs. They're vs. There

The use of their, they're and there in sentences can sometimes be confusing.

Their is a possessive adjective.

  • They missed their bus.
  • Their mother is calling them.
  • The students like their teacher.

They're is a contraction of They + are.

  • They're very happy together.
  • They're at the beach.
  • They're eating lunch.

There is sometimes an adverb of place.

  • Your pencil is over there.
  • The boy stood there for one hour.
  • I didn’t see you there.

There is also used followed by a form of BE to indicate that something exists.

  • There are three apples on the table.
  • There are some snacks in the bag.
  • There is a problem.
